Two Tournaments to Watch this Weekend

Well, it’s July 9th, so you know what that means… you guessed it, time to watch some golf. There’s plenty to choose from as the LPGA and PGA Tour players tee off today.
The more important tournament (in my opinion), and probably the more interesting one is the LPGA Torn Tour’s US Open from Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, PA. It’s more interesting than the men’s tournament because of the ongoing turmoil going on over there regarding commissioner Carolyn Bivens and the mutiny by a handful of golfers. If you haven’t seen the story, welcome back from your coma. There’s a group of LPGA golfers that asked Carolyn Bivens to step down as commissioner because they don’t think she’s doing enough to better the LPGA as a whole.
It will be interesting to see if the situation casts a dark shadow over what promises to be a great tournament with some great golf. As much as I will hate to see that happen, I’m almost positive that will be the case.
Here’s my problem with the women’s US Open. Michelle Wie and Natalie Gulbis aren’t playing. They’re two of the most recognizable names in the LPGA. Yet, the field includes 28, yes 28, amateur players. Something about that seems a little weird. It’s not really helping the LPGA’s cause, either.
The other tournament to watch is the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic from the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, IL. A lot of the big names on the PGA Tour are sitting this one out, resting up for the British Open next week. It should still be a fun tournament to watch. You can check out our fantasy golf picks for this one here.
So, whatever you choose to watch, this weekend promises to give you some entertaining golf, with a little intrigue on the side. Come on Kenny Perry, my fantasy team needs you.
