2009 Honda Classic Fantasy Golf Picks

Next on the PGA Tour schedule is the Honda Classic from the PGA National Resort in West Palm Beach, FL. We’re going to try our best to help you out with your fantasy golf picks this week. If we totally destroy your status in your fantasy golf league, make sure you let us know in the meanest way possible. Comments with insults are encouraged.
Without further ado, these are the guys you don’t want to pick this week…
A-List
Robert Allenby: Apparently, Robert Allenby loves the Honda Classic, especially when it’s played at the PGA National Resort – Champion Course. Last year, he placed tied-for-4th, and in 2007 he ended up tied-for-5th. So, based on his history, Allenby might not win the Honda Classic, but he should get you a pretty good amount of fantasy points.
Ernie Els: Ernie Els is playing well right now. He’s coming off of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, in which he put out a respectable effort before being ousted in the quarterfinals by Stewart Cink. But he, like Allenby, likes playing at the Honda Classic. He’s coming off of a victory last year at this tournament. Good enough for us to play him this weekend.
B-List
Boo Weekley: Boo has been playing well this year. He didn’t go as far as we would have liked last week at the Match Play Championship, but we’re willing to give him a pass on that because he’s been having a strong start to the early PGA Tour season. In his two tournaments this year, the Mercedes-Benz Championship and the Sony Open, he finished in the top-15. We look for Boo to bounce back after an early exit last weekend.
Steve Marino: We’re sticking with Steve Marino again this week. He earned us some significant points last week at the Mayakoba Classic, and he’s not playing too badly this year, overall. His history at the Honda Classic isn’t bad either. He finished in the top-25 at this course in 2008 and 2007, so we look for Steve to do it again in 2009. We’ll probably start him on the bench on Thursday and see what happens from there.
Davis Love III: We have to go with Davis Love III, because every time we don’t he makes us pay for it. Plus, he’s another guy that has been playing well this year to go along with a good history at the Honda Classic. He’s been in the top-35 in three out of his four tournaments this year, and last year he finished tied-for-30th at the Honda Classic, with a 13th place tie in 2007. However, now that we’re picking him, he’ll probably miss the cut.
Carl Pettersson: We really like Carl Pettersson here at TFB. He was a pivotal part of our fantasy golf team last year, and he’s had a strong start to the 2009 PGA Tour season. He has played very consistently here in the early-going, and we don’t see any reason why he can’t keep it going. On top of that, he’s finished in the top-25 at the Honda Classic both of the last two years.
C- List
Luke Donald: Luke Donald has quietly had a monster start to the 2009 PGA Tour season. He has finished in the top-25 in all four of his tournaments this year, including top-10s at the Buick Open and the Northern Trust Open. The icing on the cake is he’s coming off of a second place finish at last year’s Honda Classic. In our view, Luke Donald is a no-brainer here.
Rocco Mediate: We’re going to go out on a limb a little bit here. Since we’re taking Luke Donald, we feel like we’re free to take a shot on somebody we wouldn’t normally pick. So, we’re not going to pontificate on Rocco’s history at the Honda Classic or say he’s playing great this year. We just have a funny feeling about Rocco this weekend. If it works out, great. If not, there’s always Luke Donald.
There you have it. Take those picks to the bank…or the dumpster. Either way, make sure you let us know how your picks work out. Just leave a quick comment below and tell us how you did. Again, insults are welcome.
